Managing Flash Cards
JMemorize provides a simple and effective interface to create and manage your flash cards.
When you start JMemorize there are no cards loaded.
There are three ways to get started with a set of flash cards
- Create a new set of cards
- Load an existing set of cards
- Import a set of cards from a CSV or TSV file (comma or tab separated data file)

Loading Cards
If you have an existing set of cards you can pick the 'open' icon on the tool bar or pick file/open. If you like keyboard short cuts you can use the 'ctrl' and 'o' keys (for more information on shortcuts see http://wiki.jmemorize.org/Keyboard_Shortcuts). Any of these options brings up a file browsing dialogue from which you can pick the file you want to open.
You can find some existing sets of flash cards here: http://wiki.jmemorize.org/Lessons

Creating and Managing Cards
Creating a structure
Before adding loads of cards you probably want to give them some structure, maybe relating to lessons or chapters in a book. To do this you simply select the 'category tree' icon on the second row of the tool bar. The tree appears to the left hand side of your screen. At the top of the tree is the 'All' category. You can't change or remove this but you can add categories under it. Just pick 'add category' from the tool bar or from under the 'lesson' menu. You are prompted for the name of the category. Your new category will then get added beneath the category you have selected, which is the 'All' category initially.
Adding cards to the structure
Having set up the category structure you want, select the category you want to add to and pick the 'add card' icon. Any cards you create will be added to the selected catalogue by default but notice that the 'add card' dialogue has the option of changing the category a card will go to be selecting from the category drop down list.
If you put the cards into the wrong category you can either drag and drop them into the new category or use the 'cut and paste' features from the edit menu (also available by right clicking the mouse when in the card list window.)
To add a card put the information that you want on the front of the card in the front side box and repeat for the flipside box. If you want to continue to create cards pick the 'add and create next' button. If you want to add a card and dismiss the dialogue, pick the 'add' button.
TIP: If you are putting in a lot of cards you may find it easier to use the 'tab' key to move through the entry boxes. Hitting tab after you have entered the flipside text will activate the 'add and create next button' hitting carriage return on the keyboard at this point will then create the card.
As you add cards you will see them appear in the 'summary deck' and the 'start deck' in the visual representation of card decks. They will also appear in list form under this. The cards at this stage are grey which, as you'll see from the key, means they are 'unlearned'. For more explanation on the card decks and the colour coding see the lessons section.
